How do we bring the concepts of self-development into our everyday life?

How do we create sustainable well-being?

LighthouseOur life is normally spent riding the highs and lows of circumstances beyond our control. Our goal in presenting this information is to turn attention to the areas of our lives where we can exercise control – the inner qualities of mind. The ten mind qualities provide an excellent framework for embarking on a daily practice which instills habits that serve to change our intentions, actions, and results (habits). The ten mind qualities are basic practices for well-being, yet also fundamental for those interested in shooting for a complete awakened state of mind.

We begin our journey by bringing attention and awareness to our “inner” world. By attending to our inner body and mind we have completely changed our experience. Rather than measuring our day solely upon external events, we now look at these events as “Opportunities to Practice”. This becomes a new mindful way of living, which is in sharp contrast from normal living. It is highly recommended that these practices be conducted in tandem with other Admirable Friends (those displaying admirable qualities, and who are practicing similarly).

In order to “Shift the Conversation” (both in our minds and with others) towards well-being, it is suggested that we begin the process by developing a personal “Practice”, with one or more of the “Ten” mind qualities. In time, and with accompanying confidence, we then share our practical, first person experience with others in the hope of increasing their well-being too. Therefore, the conversation progresses from an inner dialogue (The Committee of the Mind) to an outer dialogue (An Authentic Conversation).

Before we begin, it’s important to understand the recommended process for mastering the ten mind qualities. The upward spiral of learning looks like this; a)we read or listen to the material, b)we think about the concepts alone, c)we talk through the concepts with others, and lastly, d)we practice with one of more of the concepts in our everyday life.

During this process, it is helpful to reach deep, and reflect upon:

  • VISION: What do I want to accomplish during my lifetime, and what, when I do it, gives meaning and purpose to my life?
  • PURPOSE: Why am I doing it?
  • VALUES: How am I going to do it?
